Your Family Session

Woo hoo!! You booked your portrait session! What's next?
We will communicate via email (or phone if you'd like!) to discuss location, wardrobe, your session type and answer any of your questions.
I am incredibly excited to capture you, your loved ones and the connection you share. I use my knowledge of my camera equipment, light and posing to create art you can pass down for generations to come. My favorite photo is one of my grandparents in their youth taken by my great grandfather on a polaroid camera. I never had the opportunity of meeting my great grandfather, but this image is something I cherish. Trust me, your moment in time is meaningful and deserves to be captured.
Below you will find some tips to help you prepare for your session with me.
LOCATION: We will determine a location that is best for your session together. Many clients like to use their homes for their portrait sessions. This is a great option as long as your home has adequate light. I have a vault of out door locations I know like the back of my hand that I always offer to clients. Rivers, creeks, fields, rolling hills, sunsets, etc. If you have a location in mind, I am flexible and love to shoot in locations new to me. I want you to choose a location that fits your personality and style.
TIME: I have a love affair with light. My outdoor sessions take place in the early mornings (think 8:30/9:00 am) and in the hour prior to sunset. Light is most flattering and provides a dreamy look during these two times of the day. Many families choose to give their kiddos some downtime or a late nap prior to their evening sessions in order to prepare them for the late session. My in home sessions all take place at 10:00 am, as most homes have adequate light during this time of day.
LENGTH OF SESSION: The length of your session depends on the the session type you have booked. I work quickly and efficiently during my sessions. Because of this, my Standard Session lasts approximately one hour. Short & Sweet sessions last approximately 20 minutes.
WHAT TO WEAR: Personal style should be just that, personal. Your clothing should be comfortable and a true representation of who you are. While I do not provide a client wardrobe or tell my clients exactly what to wear, I am here as a style guide if you need me. Feel free to send my way any questions or outfits you are considering or want an opinion on. Check out my what to wear guide here.
PROPS: I do not use props during my sessions. I find they often distract from what we are truly trying to capture, the connection you have with one another. However, if you have something special in mind please let me know. I am happy to incorporate it if we can.
YOUR CHILDREN: We don't want your kiddo to be surprised for their session. You can prepare them by letting them know you have a friend taking photos of them. I have found that children are not always into the idea of a photo shoot and don't like being told to smile or pose for the camera. When we first start our session, I typically allow the child to relax for a few minutes before officially starting our session. Sometimes I don't even get our my camera for the first 5-10 minutes or so until they are acclimated to me. If your kiddo is running around being silly and active during our session. It's ok! Most of the images you see of children in my portfolio were taken while kids were exploring, wandering and having fun. It's important to make sure your child is well rested, has adequate snacks and water for our session and feels comfortable. We can take snack breaks during our session, just know I typically continue taking photos during this time. I recommend you bring snacks that are dry and not messy so it can be easily cleaned off of their face and hands for photos. I do recommend having wipes in the car just in case we need them!
PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME AND BE READY TO START ON TIME: I schedule sessions around light, so our time is limited. It's important we start on time.
I am so excited to capture your family!
Please reach out with any questions you have.
See you soon!
Your Newborn Session

I’m truly honored to capture your precious newborn. My Fine Art Lifestyle sessions take place in your home. My goal is to document this fleeting moment in a creative and beautiful way.
DAY OF THE SESSION: When I arrive, I will spend a few minutes scouting out the most well list rooms of your home. Sometimes this is the living room, master bed room, nursery or even the kitchen. Master/guest beds are my absolute favorite, as this provide me with a safe space to lay your baby and typically beautiful light. If I find your room or nursery do not provide adequate light, we will not use it. Light will guide our location. I have taken an entire newborn session on an ottoman in the living room! All I need is one window with good light! Please know I am a mom of two and know exactly what it's like to have a newborn. Please don't feel like you need to clean your house and make it perfect. We can clean an area we need for photos and put it all back when we're finished. You just had a baby! Breathe deep, relax and know I am here to capture portraits of your sweet baby, not your home.
YOUR BABY: Your baby is perfect just as they are. I focus on capturing that, without too many props or outfits that can distract from the moment. I recommend a simple, snug onesie without logos or graphics, and have a few favorite swaddle blankets ready. Feeding your baby about 15 minutes before the session will help keep them calm. Whether they’re asleep or wide awake, we’ll let your newborn set the pace. I won’t pose them in any unnatural or unsafe ways.
SIBLINGS: Welcoming a new baby is a big adjustment for siblings, and their attention may not last long. I usually start with family and sibling shots to keep them engaged. I never force siblings into photos if they’re not comfortable but will do my best to include them. To prepare them, let them know a friend is coming to take family pictures.
MOM & DAD: Having a baby is hard. It's an exhausting, exciting and emotional roller coaster. Remember, I am a mother. I know exactly what this time in your life feels like. You're tired, but you're also in love with this sweet being that has made it's way into your heart and life. My goal isn’t to make your life look perfect but to capture its true beauty. Just relax, be yourselves, and we’ll make this session amazing.
LENGTH OF SESSION: I work quickly and efficiently during my newborn sessions. My newborn sessions typically take one hour, give or take, depending on your baby's needs. We will let your newborn guide our session.
WARDROBE: Be comfortable. I recommend neutral colors and loose fabrics. Style mom first, then the rest of the family.
Please reach out with any questions you have. I look forward to capturing your portraits!
